Carling Heights

Carling Heights is an eclectic neighbourhood, best known for the large Canadian Forces Base located on the southern edge of the neighbourhood, which is home to the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum. The neighbourhood contains some late 1800s farmhouses, post war single and semi-detached homes, row housing, and large apartment buildings. There are two main commercial zones on Oxford at Gammage and on Adelaide from Cheapside to Huron.

The name of the neighbourhood comes from Thomas Carling, best known for the brewery he started in London in the mid 1800s.  Carling owned the land that is now Carling Heights and used it as a farm.  As London grew, he closed the farm and sold the land in smaller parcels, including a large section to the military.

The neighbourhood includes the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre (including indoor pool and gym), McMahen Park, which has a skate park, basketball court, play structures, baseball diamond and community garden.  Carling Arena and Park are also located in the neighbourhood and has two ice surfaces, tennis courts, basket ball courts, soccer fields and a play structure.  There are a few other smaller parks tucked inside the residential areas, including North East Park, which has a swimming and wading pool.

The neighbourhood has several elementary schools including Knollwood Park, East Carling, Sir John A. Macdonald, Blessed Sacrament, and Lord Elgin.  The two closest secondary schools are John Paul II and Montcalm.
